Shadow channel question

Wouldn't it be easier if the shadow channel was black+alpha instead of black+white.
I don't fancy compositing and I keep coming up with whitish halos around my shadows.
The "embeded alpha" option really made my life easier, so why not push the idea all the way ?
Cheers,

How are you compositing it? With Multiply it shouldn't give you any white halos.

Hi Mihai,
I'm using Gimp.
Thanks for the "multiply" tip. It's exactly what I was looking for.
No need for Alpha here.
I guess I'll have to find "Gimp for Dummies".
Or are there any simple online tutorials that you would recommend ?
Cheers,

Errr... Finally, I think my suggestion makes sense :
If I composit using "multiply", I end up with a white background that I have to take out.
So again : why white instead of Alpha ?

Any help on this compositing issue ?
Mihai's trick just got me half-way : now I can composit my shadows and my render properly, but I'm still stuck between the shadow and the background.
Wouldn't it make sense to output Shadow+Alpha instead of Shadow+White ?
Thanks,
