Maxwell 1.7 running in demo mode since V2 upgrade

Since I installed Maxwell V2, MXCL 1.7.1 runs in demo mode, although I didn't remove the old licence file from the 1.7 folder.
Is this a normal behaviour? I don't think so...

No, Maxwell 1.7 and 2 are in separate directories, in the Applications folder (Mac OS 10.5.8 ), each with its own license.
I don't get it...

So you bought v2 and got the new license in the v2 program folder? But you did not alter the old license file? Is the 1.7 still the same as before the installation of v2?

I leaved the original (1.7) Maxwell folder, including the previous license file, untouched.
The new V2 license is in the new Maxwell 2 folder (and Maxwell 2 is working fine).
Both folders, Maxwell and Maxwell 2, are at the same level, in the Applications folder.

Now if I delete the Maxwell 2 folder, Maxwell 1.7 works fine again. Very weird.

I installed 2.0 to run in demo mode on mac w/ 10.5 and had the exact same problem— 1.7 only runs in demo mode. Deleted 2.0 and the 1.7 was fine.

OK, I did further tests, and it turns out that deleting only the Maxwell app (instead of the whole Maxwell 2 folder) is enough to make Maxwell 1.7 run in licensed mode again.
But copying back the Maxwell app, AND running it at least once, with or without license, is enough to put Maxwell 1.7 back in demo mode.

That's on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
It definitely looks like a mac bug. Anyone else beside Gary experiencing the same thing?

Yes, definitely it seems an OSX issue, we will look at this immediately.

Thanks,

Juan

Exakt same problem here. Maxwell 1.7 runs in demo mode since I installed V2. This is on Snow Leopard 1.6.1.

strange - i don't have this issue, but i do have my maxwell folders named separately:

1.7 is in a folder called "Maxwell-old"

2 is in a folder called "Maxwell"

I renamed the folders as you did, and then launched Maxwell 1.7, and it worked... but then I launched Maxwell 2 (it worked too), and after that relaunched Maxwell 1.7, and it was running in demo mode again.

Running Maxwell 2.0 must be setting some system path that is confusing Maxwell 1.7.

Edit: same behaviour under Mac OS X 10.5.8 and 10.6.1

Hi all,

I'll try to explain how Maxwell folder is detected in OSX in order to look for the license, why it can fail when having two versions installed, and how to work around it.

A )-Maxwell v2 takes it's own folder and try to open the license.txt file stored there.
B )-Mxcl v1.x ask the OS about the application configured to open mxs files, and try open the license stored in that application folder.
C )-Plugins for v1 or v2 ask the OS about the application configured to open mxs files, try to launch maxwell from that folder. They behave like double-clicking in Finder on a mxs file

When a user installs Maxwell 2 and launch it, the system automatically configures it as the application to open mxs files. Then Maxwell 1.x will try to open the license stored in Maxwell 2 folder, and it will fail because license for v2 is not valid in v1. Plugins will try to launch v2 applications.

What can you do to solve/workaround this issue:

1-Changing the default application for mxs files*, from v2 to v1, will make v1 look for the license in maxwell v1 folder. Double-clicking a mxs file will open mxcl v1, plugins will launch v1 applications, and Maxwell v2 will locate license.txt in v2 folder (see A). You can change default application as many times as you need/want. It will work like only having installed v1, but v2 will open licensed if so.

2- or If your Maxwell 1 license was in the old format (license.dat ). You can instead, copy license.dat also to Maxwell v2 folder, and your Maxwell v1 will also find the license. Plugins will continue launching v2 applications. Double-clicking in a mxs file will open Maxwell v2. (note: if you had a license.txt in v1, renaming it wont work)

*How to change default application:

-In Finder locate a mxs file and "Get Info" on it
-In the "Open With" combo select the version of Maxwell you want (mxcl v1 or Maxwell v2)
-Press the "Change All..." button.
-Now your mxs files file open by default in the selected version.

Best regards,

nachob

Thank you for this clear explanation! At least there's a simple workaround.
