Loving that the patch got released today!!!.. wow so many fixes.. i hoped for a patch even if not many fixes..but this is really awsome to get this many things addressed.

Here is a little comp had to do for a test on a project.. Like "knurrebusk" wasrambeling on crazy about how sun and ibl cant be used together.. the solution for me is pretty fast and fun.. just do a ibl + sun render and compiste them.. even would work in animation (and not double time as my sun only scene clears way faster.. and dont need as high sample level since it only is applied in "lighten" overlay mode in Photoshop/aftereffects:

nice that it works so fine (even though the sun in your picture is setting on the left and at the same time coming from high behind the right shoulder... ) The example shows that this way it works.

And for me IBL and sun work fine together. Only if there are too many lightsources in the scene the sun might never show up (but maybe this is adressed with the patch as well).

nice sunset render bubbaloo
the first one which really excites me. all the others still don't look that real to me.
altough i can join on mashiums comment that they may still look a bit too much like plastics. dunno if this is even fixable ...

cheers,
kami

It was around SL20 in 3h on Dual Xeon E5430 and nothing very special about the setup. I just don't use emitters but only IBL to avoid noise in SSS. The glass geometry is enclosing the SSS core without intersections so, it's valid and free of artifacts.

Of course. ;) It was just not possible to fit in this patch but, as you see it's not that useless until improved.

Most excellent to hear that Tom :) thanks! the new patch is really good. It looks (and feels) like things have changed at Next Limit now, frequent updates, much improved communication with us regular users, feedback, bugs taken care of, help and support and more. I like that! keep up the good work guys & girls at NL.

Looks awesome tom, wondering how that was modeled?

Just doing some experiments with glass bricks, the warped glass is modeled, reached an SL of 12 in 1 hour 6 mins on a dual xeon E5430.The warped geometry doesn't show up on the bricks that are sitting horizontally and vertically, maybe a higher SL would reveal this. There is also a white clump of pixels in the middle brick, had this before in an image but half of it was done with MW 1.7.1 so i dismissed it, anyone else got artifacts like this?
Also not sure if this is a bug or not but sometimes when I change from camera to perspective view in studio the viewport is very slow at refreshing (using NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX WITH 8.16.11.9062 DRIVERS) not sure whether or not to report this as a bug or not, next time I'll take a screen shot.Cant remember if that happens with a scene exported from modo or not but luxology fixed their 401 camera bug a couple of days ago so yeah.

Thanks, Brett! It's been done using poly and modifiers in 3ds max. The outer glass is thick and there is a secondary thin volume trapped in its walls.

That looks interesting but smells like the typical limitation of caustics on speculars (aka. sun-through-glass) issue. What happens if you float that horizontal brick?

Yes, we've noticed sun caustics may cause some individual spots although, very rarely indeed. But, it's one of the things we will check next time, no worries. ;)

Do you encounter this with 2.01 or was it also there in 2.0?
