Why not use FIRE for this?
Then, we want fire in material preview! :D

Q: Any chance of creating a grit/dirt shader which gives the appearance of dirt and grime in the corners and folds of objects?

A: As mentioned in the webinar, the procedural system will be much improved after the 3.0 release and it will be possible to create such a shader yes.
:D

so... how long until "after the 3.0 release"?

"Q: Any idea when the various Maxwell Render plug ins will be available?

A: They have to be available at the V3 release date, so most probably in November, along with V3."

I guess "before the 4.0 release" :P

I will have to wait to upgrade until the Blender add-on B-Maxwell is complete. As I no longer use Form-Z as my vehicle to Maxwell Render. It will be a pleasant surprise if B-Maxwell is ready along with all the official plug-ins.

Yes, it was announced over on the B-Maxwell wish list forum thread that Tom was in touch with N.Ildar.

Next Limit team:

I wonder if we can get a Blender development thread (plug-ins support) here on the Maxwell forum. One that we can leave questions and comments so N.Ildar and the Maxwell team could respond to? Especially in relation to Maxwell v3. Is that feasible at this time?

Thanks

That would be great.

Q: Is there a new shader where you can add extra BSDF layers without affecting the overall colour/tone of other layers?
A: I’m not sure what you mean by that. But there aren’t any new shaders or material components.

Hi Mihai,

thanks for answering all the questions.

On the query above, what I mean is, a shader with one BSDF of red will render red.
But when you add a second BSDF for, say a reflection (so setting this BSDF to black with Force Fresnel and a Nd of 1.6), the red color beneath renders much darker. This can be tweaked by changing the Weight value of the second reflective BSDF, but the red color will remain darker than the original red color.

With the advent of the new additive layer overbright fix, I guess I can now look to use the layer setup instead of multiple BSDFs, so this may now not be an issue.

Thanks again for the video.

cheers,

Steve

Mihai wrote:Steve, yes that's exactly right. Use a new layer and set blending to additive. It will not affect the red color underneath.
but will it mess with older materials ... that are set to have the upper layers to affect the lower ones ...?

You misunderstood, the additive layers have always worked like that - the problem was though, you had to be careful not to have an additive layer at 100% opacity for example, or several additive layers because this could create noise in the renders which didn't go away and also made the material too bright, almost glowing. Now with the additive fix you can add as many as you want.
