Is it possible to assign multiple custom mxm materials to a single object? I have already applied one custom mxm tag, and when I apply a second one, it simply replaces the first one.

Yes. It is possible.
Assign c4d-textures and polygon-selections to their slots within the mxm-tags.

The problem I have is that I can't apply more than one custom mxm texture tag to an object. I even tried renaming the custom mxm tag, then applying a second one, but the second one simply replaces the first one.

Hm...strange... never heard of such an issue...
Got no idea, to be honest.. you're using the most actual versions?...
Sorry.. not very helpful...

I'm using Cinema 9.6 and Maxwell 1.1 with the cinemaxwell 1.1 plugin.
I thought it was strange too, but no matter what I try, I can't assign more than one custom mxm texture tag to an object.
Anyone else?

It works like this
Obj - C4D Mat1, Poly Selection1, Maxwell Mat1(using C4D Mat1 and Poly Selection1),C4D Mat2, Poly Selection2, Maxwell Mat2(using C4D Mat2 and Poly Selection2),etc, etc.
Make sure to pull the C4D Mats and Poly Selections into the corresponding slots in the Custom MXM Material.
This is if you want to work on a per face basis.
There is also the possibility to create a MXM material with multiple layers and masks for different material regions. This needs a proper UV Map (also applied with a C4D Material Tag)
