In the final version this week alpha maps should be useable again.
They don't work with the RC5 but will be working in the final release. So just try it on wednesday after installing 1.0...
Then you should also be able to use the alphamapped trees..... but they should appear in your renders now just without texture or black, but they should appear. Check if the scale is correct!
You should at least see the geometry you are projecting the texture onto when you are rendering it.
