Just curious, are the grooves in the columns modelled with boolean operation, or some other method? I'm just wondering how clean of a mesh Sketchup exports because it seems like a very intuitive tool judging from the videos on their site.
Could you post a wire?

One problem I keep having is with mesh smoothing... I just never used it before - general arch work in su rarely needs smoothing - but now that I'm using Maxwell and realism is very much at hand edge treatment is very important... just look at the studio image zuliban posted some time ago!
This reason is of course lack of modeling skills of this kind and I would like to know if some of you guys here can refer me to good tutorials on this… I tried many times in Max, Wings and now I try Silo… but I just can't predict how the mesh will act after smoothing, just exporting from SU with sharp edges and then chamfer doesn’t do the trick.
Well… maybe @LAST will solve some problems in v5.0, so app travel won't be a problem, who knows ?

THanks for the wire! It's good to see that there were no booleans involved, I was afraid Sketchup would import a bunch of tiny triangles.
If I do tutorial for XSI will you do one for Sketchup?
Using smoothing for architecture very rarely works. In the library I did I didn't use it at all. All the sharp corners I just applied bevels to them, while trying to keep the mesh as clean as possible.
Can you do fast bevels with Sketchup?

Nice image Bakbek,
Sketch Up does look like a fast way to model, specially the push pull tool.
I've been thinking about it for sometime now, I could model most of it in Sketch up, bring it into XSI and bevel all the hard edges.
In Max all you have to do is:
Select object go into polygon suboject selection
Select all the polys and hit autosmooth in Polygon properties.
Just adjust the autosmooth value until desirable.
If that doesn't work you could allways do it manually by selecting the polys ( say the ones in that go into the column) apply a number. Then select the polys on the main column and give it a different number.

No, that's not the same thing. Autosmooth, or Smooth in Max is just polygon normal smoothing.
Bakbek, would be cool to make a mini tutorial for those columns for example, then I can compare to how I would do it in XSI and post that.
