not putting this up because its particularly special (although it looks way better than any other renderer I tried - no names) but because it paid for my copy of Maxwell!
Thanks all of you that have provided insights, mind bending explanations and inspirational images on this forum - roll on the 22nd!

Hi rafi, the DOF is simply a matter of choosing a relatively small 'f' number in your Maxwell Camera settings, critically though you must make sure the camera target is exactly where you want the 'in-focus' area to be.
I think I used f4 or something, but settings will be based on the scale of your particular scene and the focul length of the 'lens' on your camera so this might be completely wrong for you.
Basically - get the target on the focus point and experiment with the camera f number and you should see the effect you want - to change the brightness of the image only use the shutter speed and film iso settings.
all the best - Julian

know what you mean error404, I did actually use 7 blades though (in the hope of recreating a Canon L!) but maybe didn't cook it long enough - the client wanted no DOF at all in the end so I didn't experiment further.
Can see I'm going to get a reputation for putting my balls on(the)line...

Nice picture.
Can you please explain meh how you make the texture? In maxwell you can`t use a blend mat. How you make a this?
I need the same, but with a glas mat for my website.
I hope you can help me.

Hi DeadlyAppearance, this material/texture was only possible because you can create a metal look from the Maxwell Plastic material by adjusting the specularity and diffuse colours. (ie metal always has black diffuse and its reflection provides its colour, so by using colour maps in the slots of the Maxwell Plastic you can achieve areas of metal and areas of plastic).
Unfortunately this is not possible with the Maxwell Dielectric material as it does not have the same options. So if you want to achieve a glass/metal mix for example, the only way you can get around this at the moment is to build the different material areas into your model.
I suspect your best bet at this stage is to wait until next Tuesday when hopefully these workarounds will be a thing of the past!
hope this helps
