Nice one!
I feel that the shell needs some transparency/sss, and the snail body could use more also.

not all shells have transpancy ; i find many photos of shells with different effects

for snail body the lighting give me this result ; with different lighting i get more transparent material
here the same model with different lighting :

maxwell calculate the shadow , what you mean with :the rock is throwing shadow on the snail body?
for the light of sun its not always the same intensity

i just meant that the sss is not visible because photons entering the medium/snail body are too weak/diffuse
direct sunlight, as on the left eye, reveals it, as your test image shows.

yes and we can see a little sun light touch the eye of snail and the sss effect is visible

I guess he means that if you put the snail at the higher part of the rock, the light will hit the snail making it stand out and also showing the sss effects. It would be a more cinematographic and dramatic shot; like at The Lion King but with a snail... The Snail King, hehe

the snail is part of the scene ; and it is very slow when moving
