I used to paint on the Amiga with this, ahh my old best friend :

Image

Old version : http://www.lumental.com/sgrunger/C64Mouse4.jpg

Modeled in Solidworks, rendered in MAX with Maxwell 1.1.33, sampling levels 13 reached in ~4 or so hours, one white emitter plane, tiny bit of photoshop brightness/contrast adjustment.

UPDATE: Bigger render with a bit more bounces and fixed geometry.
UPDATE2: Added his tail friend.
UPDATE3: New render in 1024 width + 1 extra sampling level + 10 bounces instead of 8 or 9 (I forget)

Updated the pic,
Did Jay Miner actually design the whole mouse? Was it destined for the Amiga or the Commodore64/128? Since I know that C64's mini operating system, Geos, used the 1351 mouse and all. I was 5 years old when I had a C64 so I guess I'm a bit 'young' and unaware of all the facts and dates.

Hehe, this one brings back retro memories from the -80's :D
Good and nice pic except for one thing that bothers me, the buttons look
too sharp and big around their edges. Other than that it's great!

Amiga ruled! :) By the way, Jay Miner was an electronic engineer, not a designer. The mouse was designed for the Amiga 1000 (the first model, publicly released in 1985).

I really like your image and the idea, Ribstwi. I've still got two of those mouses here. Some constructive comment:

I guess the buttons in your model are just a tiny bit too short and too dark brown, and there are apparently two reasons that make the buttons come out a bit too much:

1: The button angles differ a little from the real thing and
2: the mouse edge around the buttons has an angle that is too extreme.

Here's the real thing:

Keep up the nice work.

Cheers!

Metinseven, thanks for the points to fix, I have the mouse in front of me and realize the 'top' of the mouse didn't have the same angle as the bottom, fixing that led to a much more realistic model.

Hi Ribstwi,

It's a truly great model now, good job. Now if you only make the buttons less brownish the materials will be totally authentic as well.

Would you mind sharing the model if I may ask? No problem if you wouldn't like that.

Cheers!
