"The Cone Family on Vacation"

G'day!

I thought i'd start the new year with a brand spanking new rendering i made the other day of a set of Evermotion premade models i got, these are the cones as you can see. Nothing really special of fancy, just cones :)

Some facts..
- The scene is fully setup within 3dsmax, Studio was never touched for this.
- One single hdri map lits the scene, no other lightsources were harmed during the creation of this image.
- Materials are simple two layer mxm's, a little bit of sss is added but i'm not sure it's even visible.
- Render resolution is 1600x1200.
- Rendertime was a nightmare with 30 hours, 26 minutes, 29 seconds.
- Computer used was a P4 3ghz with 2gb ram.
- Groundtexture was a bit too lowres which ruins this rendering.
- DOF is somewhat too strong also, it makes these look like miniatures.
- SL 17,46 was reached, rendering was still noisy so post noisereduction been done.

Hi Max, happy new year!

Great to see you start of with a new render!! :!:
overall it looks good, maybe some pixelation in the bottom right corner on the ground texture?

The link to the full version gives me a 800x600 image?

Btw, exploring 3d studio max instead of Rhino? ;)

Hervé: Hehe, happy.. well who knows, they should be happy as they're on vacation :) i also noticed that the white parts got a bit blown out which sucks, but after 30 hours rendering this thing i'm not gonna redo it again, sorry :(

Nico: Thanks and happy new year to you too! :) it was time for something new, i haven't rendered anything with Maxwell in a long time now and felt bad about that so i thought i'd give the new 3dsmax plugin a twirl to see what been done to it. It's pretty impressive compared to the old plugin, but still lots to do on it.. you're right and i mentioned it above in the details that the groundtexture is pixelated :( that part sucks, i were unable to find a higher resolution texture like that to use, so it's like this now. I'm sorry

The link to the fullres 1600x1200 image works but for some reason Imageshack resized it down to 800x600 so i removed it now :( damn.

4 Hero: Heh.. oh please there's nothing special about this :) but thanks anyways. Btw your renderings truly rock!

Hi Maximus, you can be happy, that you don't have a client how need the image tomorrow - noise, 30h rendertime for a little fix, plugin problems. But don't give up.

My experience: HDRIs with strong contrast cause much more noise and longer render times. Maybe it helps to use a low contrast HDRI and an additional emitter.
Also you could upscale your pixelated texture, so you could avoid the visible pixel artefacts at the ground.

I wish you a happy new year and good luck for your work.

Micha

PS: I'm not sure how Maxwell handle with HDRIs, but some HDRIs are with burned in gamma 1, that cause stronger lighting contrasts. Need Maxwell gamma 1 or gamma 2.2 HDRIs?

Unless these are supposed to be miniatures, your scale is off or your f-stop is set to an impossibly low value. I kind of like the "toy cones" thing, though...

You can adjust burn in the console app. without re-rendering.

Micha: You're right, if that would be the case i'd be using another engine to render this with if it was for a client, but this is just private testing.

Hm yes i forgot about that with high and lowcontrast hdri's, although i don't think that should affect the outcome as much as it do now with Maxwell. The crappy groundtexture is all my fault, i had no better texture so i simply slapped this one on hoping for the best which in the end was a real bad idea as it makes the rendering look like shit :)

Happy New Year to you too Micha.

Mverta: Yeap you're right, they're not supposed to look like miniature cones. That's all my fault and i'm sorry i messed it up :( they should look like big real one's and not like this.

Frances: Yes you're right i can do that, and i tried to do that too and it didn't look any better as it dimmed the whole image and made it too dark. Thanks for the tip tho, i appreciate it.

Hey Max, the ground texture looks as though it's bump/normal map is inverted.

You can totally remove DOF using F-Stop =100, Shutter = 1/1.625 & ISO 400-800.

Looking forward to more,

Tim.

Don't remove DOF if you want to retain photorealism. Just set it, like your exposure settings, for realistic values given the lighting setup and subject. If you want it to look like a photo, replicate taking a photo as far as possible.
