Hi,
its a simple illustration for our national PC magazine cover. I know that the real hard disk doesn't have this kind of colored highlights (typical for CD) but its here for illustration purposes.I really enjoy non arch.viz. work but it happens so rarely for me

Beautiful Render.. and great concept. I loved the glare and the lock's texture!
But since ths is a magazine cover... May I suggest to give the margins room to breathe? On the design I would make more dramatic distinction on the hole where the lock is going through. Maybe a more dramatic approach like with cracks around the whole...
Another great thing to pay attention is on the size relation between the lock and the disk. To make it more appealing tweek the size of the lock, so you have more contrast.. Both ellements on your scene are almost the same size and shape so you don't have much contrast. Maybe tewaking the size of the "arm" of the padlock. Since you have a high reflection on the sufrace of the disk.. the arm of the lock seems shortened.
Here is a small illustration on what I'm talking about. Please don't be angry that's just a design critique... and it is my very subjective opinion

hi markps,
i totaly understand your point but i was very constrained on how the elements have to be arranged and the whole concept.
this is not the final illustration, they wont use this background or format
and they didnt like the cracks when i proposed earlier
unfortunatelly i was comissioned only to produce the 3d part without knowing
where or how exactly it will be placed, and all placement, proportions are tweaked according to the guidelines they provided.
but as they are very pleased, the next time i might get more control over the whole concept

Nice texturing and lighting, also the interference colors are really cool.

Kizo,
Just wondering...can you share your 'CD' material or show us the setup for it?

for the cd like material I used a metal with Nd =25 and a coating layer with Nd= 1 and the this map.
this is more a workaround, i culdnt get the right material so this worked fine

Thank you very much for the map.
but IMHO, the material of your disk render is look like CD.
but your image is hard disk plate.
I thought that hard disk plate is more goldish.

a disk plate look exactly like that

but maybe with less spectral color separation... this make it look like a CD
