Is there a general rule of thumb for an architectural interior light rig? Spot? Point?

err you dont use either of those, only sky dome, sunlight or an emitter object, have you used it at all?

im not even using emitters, just physical sky with sun. theres really no way i add an emitter and hide it.

Hmmm, is your scene scale in cm's...maybe a screen shot would help, or moving the sun location.

As Brett says check your units and also check surface normals for emitters, an emitter only emits in normal's direction.
If you want a spot light use an open cone with a circular planar surface inside as emitter for example, if you want a point light use a sphere, a flashlight with a small plane above the camera and remember to reduce faces in emitter surfaces to reduce render times (noise)
