Maya 7 / Maxwell memory problems. crashes

So I'm still running Maya 7.

I have a question.

Lately Maya seems to be very slow at loading scenes with maxwell shaders. In addition, if I select 50 simple cubes, as I did here (with the grid object), and try to assign a dark gray 'lambert' style maxwell shader to each, then maya chugs along, taking about a half second per object.

Then after about 20 objects it complains of a memory problem and crashes.

Any ideas?

The solution seems to be to leave Maya and use the standalone studio

Very slow performance in the GUI.

Changing the roughness from 100 to another number takes minutes before control is returned.

Noby has this problem?

The time is probably spent generating the viewport preview for the Maxwell materials. Do you have an ATI FireGL card? Did you try any of the workarounds suggested in this thread?
