Can MW/Maya do UV mapping???

I believe this has been addressed in this forum, but the tread every one points to has been deleted.
Is is possible to do UV mapping with MW? Whenever I try (to use a 2d placement node in the "color" channel of an MXDiffuse) all I get is a solid black object.
