OOPS!
Seems like it is a fake plugin :(
There is an installer for maya 8.5 but it installs version for 8.0 (though it says that it is installing the plugin for maya 8.5)

[edit]

No, it is not fake, it is messed up! You need to install the maya 8.0 plugin to get a 8.5 one and 8.5 plugin to get the 8.0 one (in Mac OS X for sure).
Agter installing the correct version the maxwell.bundle file must be moved to appropriate plug-in folder.

Cheers!

IS there anything new. .the website says update ont he main site.. so were there any updates to the maya 8 plugin too?

the maya plug team is great.. but just a a little icing on the caake it would be cool to hae a whatsnew.txt or versionhistory.txt included with the zip file for these upgades so we can read up on changes/additions

or is there a file like this already ihave missed?

Correct installation of Maya 8.5 maxwell render plug-ig

1 install the plugin from the version 8.5 installer.
The maxwell.bundle file is installe in a directory /shared/alias/maya 8.0/plugins (or something like this), and the olugin scripts are installed in /shared/autodesk/maya 8.5/
This is done automatically.
2 install the plugin from v 8.0 installer, ignore the warning about older version of the plugin.
the correct maxwell.bundle file is installed into /shared/alias/maya 8.0/plugins directory and owerwrites the old one.
3 copy the new maxwell.bundle file from it's location to /shared/autodesk/maya 8.5/plugins
4 find and load it from within Maya (if it is not found automatically)

Can anyone please confirm that i am not wrong and this issue really exists?

What are the errors? The correct plugin must be in the same folder with correct mel scripts and icons.
Like
/users/shared/autodesk/maya/8.5/plugins
/users/shared/autodesk/maya/8.5/scripts
/users/shared/autodesk/maya/8.5/icons

If it is not like this - maxwell will not find the needed procedures and all the other stuff.
Check if these folders contain the .mel and .xpm files.
It worked for me, so the problem is not in the plug-in itself, but un the wau it is installed.

// Error: Unable to dynamically load : /Users/Shared/Autodesk/maya/8.5/plug-ins/maxwell.bundle
does not match the current architecture //
// Error: does not match the current architecture //
// Error: does not match the current architecture (maxwell) //

thats what I get ..

no matter how I do it .. and it messed up my 8.0 installation aswell
