Why would you use that when there are two built in Mental ray Ambient occlusion shaders in Mental ray? Just wondering...

BECAUSE it's mental ray... i just don't want to tweak settings for hours just to get this pass :)

i never use mental ray.

and this script doesn't need shaders to be assigned, so it leaves Your maxwell shaders alone and You have to deal only with one renderer...

it's just a different solution i wanted to show to people that may be interested.

iv alway accomplishe dthis with render layers in maya 8.. probably in 7 too.. Its in your display layers menu, you can switch it to renderlayers. .and creat a new layer.. rightclick on it to show the "presets" and select the final gath/ambient occlucion one.. IT dont change your shaders and renders those AO images to a folder with the name of that layer..

But ill try this script to seeif theres any difference

BTW... HERE is a Great video on taking advantage of the maya render layers setup and how they work ..

DEFINATLY check this video out if you have never used the maya render layers. .I had no Idea how EASY they are and how they can be NON destructive to your shaders/scene setup.

This video really opened my eyes to how simple, fast, and Very powerful maya's intergrated renderlayers are.. Plus when rendering a regualer mb file animation - it renders all the layers just noramly with a batch render no special setup or anything extra required.. just render like you do normally...

Thanks to ASHRAF AIAD for this great tutorial.

thanks Luke... i'll watch them soon.

certainly there are sometimes things that one can not know when never using them. i learn fast concerning 3d, but sometimes i can not have the same amount of knowledge about a 3d software as someone that has been working in the business for over ten years.
i never worked with render layers and i will get into it...

hey man i feel ya.. I know I didnt know about these render layers either.. till maya 8. .they came out with MAYA 7!.. AHH i was soo pissed wen i realised I had used maya 7 and never had touched the render layers.. and I just recently saw this video that i posted..maybe a few months ago..
you know thats what is so amazing about maya.. you can learn sooo much new stuff everyday if you explore around with maya.. its a big adventure of a program.

But its great that you posted the AO mel script . there is a huge imediate speed advatage to using it I mean just to get a quick AO pass/preview or whatever.. you dont even have to go thru the clicks of using the render layers.
