Maya is a comprehensive suite of tools for animation, modelling, dynamic simulation, etc. Studio's features are essentially a subset of this - a tool to position imported geometry from an application like maya and assign materials and emitters. There are a couple of things like the sunlight positioning tool and ability to hide emitting lights that Studio has as an advantage over an external app (though hopefully the hidden to camera flag within maya will be sorted in the next update) - but otherwise they are not comparable.

I use maya on a regular basis, and am very familiar with it...i just couldnt understand the benefits of using mayall to render from Maya rather than export everything out and into Studio, and render from there :)
