I think that f-stops below one are impossible in real world, maybe Maxwell get impredictible results, in this case a nice DOF, i need to consult to the Maxwell developers to know it better.
We have made many test using the default real f-stops: 5.6, 8, 11, 22, and all of them get nice results.
Maybe the problems resides in the scene configuration or you camera has some strange configuration?
Play around with the f-stop.
Here you can see a nice image using DOF:

Hello Lisa, this is very interesting, what scale units are you using and how close is the camera to the actual objects? Are using zoom to get the closeups or is the camera actual that close to the objects.

I am trying to figure out if DOF is affected by camera distance as well. If this is the case.

Longer lenses should return more of the defocusing around the center of interest... a short18 mm lens is very wide... many things are sharp and in focus - with longer lenses (try a 200mm) the areas of focus are much less and you'll find much more blurring surrounding your area of focus.

That being said, I'm still only getting DOF sometimes - and I've noodled my F-Stop and ShutterSpeed parings endlessly, aiming for an fstop of 1.2....
Still only DOF sometimes... I saw that this issue had been resolved but I have not found the anser yet in my searches....

any help is always welcome!
