No you can't do that, atleast not as far as i know. You need to use something like Sketch & Toon in Cinema4D for such sketched effects. I post some examples i created when i'm home tonight.

Frosty...

Which modeler are you using?

Check xenomorphic.co.uk for some nice materials. They are located in the "education" section of this site.

Of particular interest is the engineering crosshatch material. It might provide a nice place to start.

Here's a quick render done in MAX using the material I refer to...

This is the bitmap that the material uses to achieve the crosshatch effect.

As you can see, one could easily create one more in keeping with your "sketchy" pencil look and get closer to what you want.

Good luck!

Some time ago i created a package of Sketch & Toon shaders for Cinema4D, here's a preview of what they look like rendered on a cube. I'm so sorry about all these huge images. :(

And a bunch of my own rendered examples with Sketch & Toon :)

Yep. Max has the answer.
Great look.
I think it's pretty close to what Frosty is after.

Oh, I forgot to mention that my suggestion is a free downloadable MAX file.

very nice toon shaders MAX!
i also would prefer rendering toon-style-images with other renderengines...

here is my quick attempt rendered with maxwell:

Blueplanetdesign thanks for the suggestion, i do use 3ds max but i'll have to find a way to import my models into max from the format that i receive them from our engineer (solid works).

Magnus, ah those are what i was looking for! but no c4d. :x I love the timer and the mouse!

Gotoxy av-media, i have don some similar things in studio but i wish i could achieve a 'hidden line' sketch.

...just the same way you did it!

as you already said before there is no way generating a toon-style-mxm...

1. apply a toon shader to the teapot
2. convert the toonstrokes to poly (outlines)
2. assign ags to the teapot (fill-color)

Thanks Frosty :)

Gotoxy: Clever solution, i never thought of converting the strokes to lines like that. Your result looks great!!

@MAX

nice to hear that from the master of mxms!

@frosty

hidden line?! hmm, you can achieve very different toon-styles...
i will do some tests!

Gotoxy
in what program are you selecting toon shader?

frosty,

i am using maya2009!
toon works pretty well and you can even apply painteffects to the toonlines...
btw. hidden line is supported!

not a beauty but it works:
