HDRI Image Kit is ready to download....

Hi Folks,

Here are the download links to an HDRI Image Kit I put together with the aim of getting more people into building their own HDR studio image sets and hopefully sharing them with the community.
The component kit offered here was put together from the loose collection of parts and pieces that I usually use myself. They are ever changing but these shapes have been used more than others. I have also included a simple image resizing action set for Photoshop and a set of my favorite texture brushes. Although not directly tied to HDR images I do use the brushes often enough on them and I thought you might like them anyway.

I want to say that I am no authority on HDR imaging or IBL. Just an average user wanting to learn more and stoke the fires and that is really the point of this exercise.

I work in Lightwave and all of my setup, texturing, scene tweaking etc., takes place there. Maxwell is run through the LW plugin and seldom through Studio. I have included a description and shots of the LW scene I use for testing the HDR's and few of the scene objects in the .lwo and .obj formats. The same scene can easily be built in any host program if you care to experiment along those lines.

Originally the image set was constructed at 6K res, which I myself rarely if ever use. I posted a question regarding the preferred image size on the forum but there was only one reply from good buddy simmsimaging saying 6K would be fine. But unfortunately with the files at 6K the kit weighed in at nearly a gig! So, I dropped the files to 3K to make whole deal easier to work with. 3K still offers a 10 inch image at 300 DPI, fine for a full page print. If you find you want more res then it's easy to use the components as templates and make larger files for yourself.

For the more experienced operators the instructional part I threw in may or may not be of much value but for the less experienced it should at least be helpful to some degree for becoming a bit more familiar with IBL.

If anyone finds mistakes or glaring technical errors please point them out so we can all learn to do it right. Same goes for any tips and tricks anyone feels like sharing about IBL or the making of HDR images or anything related, please post them. I am hoping this is just a start and we can maybe take this a few steps further by creating a more sophisticated user's kit and building a free HDR image repository along the line of the materials and sky sets.

I have assumed that anyone into 3D imaging to the point of being interested in something like this has at least a working knowledge of Photoshop so there are no lessons or detailed techniques offered in that area, you are on your own there. It is all really pretty simple and for the most part self explanatory when you look at the files. There are a couple PDF's for you to take a look at too.

Download the parts, play around, have some fun and post some images if you come up with something you want to share or any comments you want to make. Cheers, Ron

Thanks very much for this, Ron. I'm sure this'll be a huge help for people - like myself - who are looking to learn more about the use and creation of HDR images in a more hands-on approach.

Great work. :)

Hello Ron—

Thanks for your work on this.

I tried to down load the Mac files but A) it says "file doesn't exist" and B) the files end with the extension exe, is this correct?

Thanks again.

Gary
