What does it look like with an emitter material applied to the object and turning on scattering in mxcl?

Heres my result so far.. not to good..
I have an emitter inside the shell, I have a blue color applied to the shell, but the emitter is just washing it out..
light on
light turned off
on to more tests...

I think the hard route would be sss; the medium one would be the one you are trying (I would reduce attenuation distance quite a bit); I think the easiest way would be just a coloured emitter material plus some bdsf layers to show when the emitter is off.

Another trick you can use is Scattering as Mihai suggested, as the blue colour will be more visible and not as washed out!
Also try and not make the emitter to bright!
Try this you should see improvements, worked for me on my light saber
