And don't forget to grab yourself a copy of CrazyBump, it's still free as it's in beta but works very well when you're creating displacements or any other map from your sourceimages.

Hehe

you're welcome Matthias. Yeap this is one of the programs i use when i create my maps for my mxm's.
You also need a paintprogram, but i bet you got that already. Other good useful apps are FilterForge, Gimp with it's seamless tiling plugin, Texture Maker, MapZone.

Many thanks Matthias, i appreciate your kind words
Here's some plugins you might find useful for Gimp

they're easy to install
http://gimp-texturize.sourceforge.net/
http://www.logarithmic.net/pfh/resynthesizer
http://liquidrescale.wikidot.com/
One more thing about Gimp on Windows, sometimes on some systems with alot of fonts in them you may get a crash when you startup Gimp as it has to cache all fonts. However to get around that problem you can disable all font loading. Then you will obviously have no access to any fonts within Gimp but atleast it'll run.
The solution is to select properties on the Gimp shortcut icon, and in the Target path you add after the text there this command
--no-fonts just like that and then apply and hit ok. This works great!
