Hi all,
please bear with me as I am just getting my head around Maxwell.
The diamond on left is standard ruby mxm. The one on right I created a material and just applied ior deep red ruby from one other posts.

Why are they so different? As I don't understand ior, I am just learning.

Thanks
Rich

Check your roughness and transmittance values. If you want to render a ruby, roughness must be 0

Hi, I confirm, roughness must be 0, or very low at any rate: 6 or 7 at most. ior files for colored gemstones are created from absorbtion spectra produced by gemmology labs. They reflect optical properties of particular sample of gemstones. I have several ruby ior files. I'll plan to release then some day through the mxm gallery, but it takes time to tweak them an to render the sample images. I'll try to do it before the March contest is over.
