I'm very curious about that point. What's your critaria to rate a material? is it base on the preview or do you test them? Is base on how the material will be usefull for you? or do it look real?...

for me, it would be something in between it's looking-real-qualities and personal appeal factor.

I rate it based off of how close I think it looks to reality simple as that. Since reality is what I shoot for in my renders. I think I gave yours a 9.00. I have never given a 10 to any material for some reason

Its kind of subjective, but I like the simplicity of the rating system. It brings the good ones to the top if you sort by rating. I think this is what the rating is for is to weed out the really bad ones like bricks that have no bump applied or wood that looks like black plastic. Just my 2 cents. Others may rate for other reasons.

I think the rating depends on the type of material, whether it is a "basic element" or has specific maps. First off : I do not rate that many materials, since I think that you have to use a lot of the materials first in order to understand them. BUT in a few cases I rate using the preview. This is either the case when a preview looks really convincing or really off base.
