Another flower in development...
Faking "fuzziness" with R2 on the leaves. Very hard to find decent photos to map onto flowers.

Hatts I must say it is looking fantastic! The leaves look spot on.

Petals look great! Green leafs are lacking something......maybe too rough reflections and not enough bump.

@Tok_Tok I can't speak for "how to properly photograph a flower" but I am getting a better idea of how to deal with the photo once you've got one.

Here's a petunia made with a much better texture

Image

Critical steps:
1. Have a large, crisp color photo
2. Generate a well-balanced black & white depth map from it
3. Generate a normal map from the depth map
4. Remove all baked-in shadows from the color photo using dodge/burn, this is new color map

Before - with baked-in shadows.

After (right) - with flattened shading

It certainly is getting better! Getting a more perfect flower.

Although I have to say that on a close-up like this I'm missing the thickness of the pedals a bit, their just too flat.

Edit: Or maybe it isn't the thickness but the curls at the end of the pedals..

looking great, Matthew.

all I can say is don't worry about the technical application of what makes it look good...... just make it look good :)
