Here's my in-progress begonia. I'm wondering if I could make the petals somehow less "papery" looking...

Hello,

did you use thin SSS?

Hi David, yes I used it on the leaf but not the petal.

The project this is used for will have about 100 of these flowers, and is quite a wide view, I may turn SSS off for the leaf too.

I just think the petals need more "softness" somehow but I'm not sure if the best way to achieve that would be through the reflectivity, the clip map, or something else...

maybe try a matte finish overlay layer that has a custom R2 fresenel so it's only noticably from steep angles. That'll create kindof of velvety look, which might help if you use it subtly.

Here's a screenshot from the game Super Mario Galaxy, which uses this effect extensively. Looking at the apple on the left, this seems to give it a much softer, more organic look. Obviously, this image is more extreme than you'd need, but just for reference of the idea.

Check Velvet material in Mxed wizard and this link about r2:

David is right. Thin SSS is the way to go here. Don't give up on it.

Thanks everyone

I'll start from the velvet wizard and texture it up and throw a thin SSS on there and then see where that takes me.

Started this material from the velvet wizard. Looks a bit softer where the microfiber is picking up white highlights.

I'd increase asymmetry a bit, reduce attenuation or mix with a opaque bsdf. It looks too thin.

Finally gave in and added thickness to the petals. I think it's improved

big time! now work on the leaf.... it's looking a little metalic.
