So... this is now the third time I'm rebuilding the eagle, I just got to have it completely build in SW...



And two renders of what I had/have in Rhino, just to refresh your mind (already with the new backbone...) :

This is great work. I have such a soft spot for Space 1999, it was my absolute favorite as a kid. I used to have some 3D ViewMaster disks of the show but sadly they've been lost to history

What is your source of information for modeling the Eagle? I think I'd like to give it a go with MicroStation

Thanks for the tip Nico, I emailed Daniel but haven't gotten a reply yet. I see what you mean by the need for reference images, I found a great site with so much material that I'm starting to think this is going to be a much bigger project than I initially thought

I found another source for blueprints at http://www.space1999.net/eagle/ but from what I can tell, they're not as detailed as the ones from Daniel.

I'm looking forward to the challenge but I see it as a great vehicle to hone my Maxwell material creation skills.

I'm in research mode for the time being until I get my blueprints from Daniel but this gives me the opportunity to take in as many details as I can.

Your second to last image (the one with the Eagle lying on the ground without it's landing pads) reminded me of something in this photo http://www.space1999.net/catacombs/main ... e1vp05.jpg. It looks to me like the landing pads are the shape they are so they can retract into the shoulder pod above them. The thing is, I don't recall ever seeing the Eagle with the landing pads in the retracted position. I'm thinking it might be interesting to try and incorporate this ability into my model but I guess that'll depend on the details and how far I'm willing to move away from the original proportions.

You're right, to my knowledge that was the intention, but due to time and money issues they decided to make it the way they are now.
It might however be very interesting indeed to make them retractable, I think I'll make that version too, as an extra.

I know that its too much to expect the exterior modeling of the Eagle to match exactly the interior design of the life size sets but I've noticed a few cases where the discrepancy is quite major.

Externally the central passenger pod has those four banks of skylights. I know that in the original model they were painted black but in our CAD models those windows can be made transparent which then makes it obvious that you can't have that bank of computers you seen in this image:

Another feature of the original model is the two large hollow tubes running vertically right through the front access corridor and the aft compartment. You know those two spots right between the two front shoulder pods and the rear two shoulder pods. Well in these interior images:

Both those interior spaces wouldn't be all that functional with a dirty great tube running right through the middle of them.

I know that artistic interpretation and time limitations are a big part of designing this sort of stuff but it is never the less interesting to see where the shortcuts were made.
