I am using RF 2012 on a single workstation. I have found that RF performs better on high Ghz processors than more cores/dual proc at lower Ghz. Also the higher particle count, the more % of CPU is utilized. It's also very specific to the type of sim you are doing. So... lots of variables. It's still a lot of trial and error/waiting on simulations for me.
2013's features look amazing, so I'm looking forward to that. I'm sure if you upgrade now, you'll get 2013 when it comes out.
I'm sure the optimizations to the code since RF4 will give you a hefty increase in speed. Also, there's the grid solver which is just amazing for larger scale sims. BTW, I think the grid solver is the only system that you can break into multiple nodes to simulate.
