Tensile membranes

**Maxwell Newbie alert**
Hi ! New kid on the block, and first post in the WIP section.
I'd really appreciate comments and suggestions on how to improve my presentation of these types of designs :
http://www.box.net/shared/34mek73yv9
The illumination is realistic sky with sun, and the ground / background is a big bent surface with very basic material.
A bigger one here : http://www.box.net/shared/vzajdd6xvg
Amongst other things, I am struggling with the PVC membrane material which is typically applied to single surface objects, and has a white shinny reflectance and somewhat beige translucence.

Thanks !

Well, I would use a better material for the ground and probably a more interested camera angle.... I can only imagine the sky and the sun... It would be nice to see the sky...
Also, depending on the kind of the material you could try with some SSS

Hi JTB,

Thanks for the answer.
I chose to go for a "Studio-like" setup because if I start trying to do a realistic environment, I have more chances to mess up and produce something unconvincing.
Where can I find advice on studio setups ?

The material I use for the membrane does have SSS, but I'm not sure how to tweak the parameters since they relate to thick objects, and my object is single-layer...

Cheers

SSS materials only work with solid objects, not single surfaced ones.
But you could use rhinos _OffsetSrf to create a thickness.

Hi Kami,

Well, I based my attempts on a curtain material I found in the Maxwell MXM gallery, and it does make use of SSS.
Of course I could thicken the membrane object, but the Rhino mesher being what it is, I might get self-intersecting meshes.
These membranes can be quite big, and the thickness is less than 2mm !
