Background plate for hdri images?

Taking a post from the Goodies forum by Fille, how is a background plate created to place a car on a road as shown in this thread:

I am having problems using a flat plane with the car to get the shadow of the car. I can get the car placed o.k. but the plane is visible in the render. Both Fille and I would appreciate some guidance with this.

Thanks much,
Ron

Two ways:

Do a second render and only activate the Shadow Pass channel in Render options. In the material applied to the plane, turn on the Shadow option (from the row of buttons under the preview). You'll get a render with just the shadow of the car falling on this plane. Then composite in Photoshop.

There is also a 'trick' you can use to render both the render channel and shadow pass channel in one go, as described in this post:

Just change one detail from that post, don't set the second layer weight of the material to 0, instead leave it at 100 and turn this bsdf off using the yellow button in the bsdf area (right side of the material editor).

But I don't think you save much render time doing it in one go, it still has to render both channels, so it will take about the same amount of time. But perhaps it's more convenient.

I don't think I will post anything before I manage to make a decent car paint material... :) I haven't so far... Just waiting for Mike Verta to make the missing tutorial, where he promised to talk about car paints and glass among other things... HEY MIKE, ARE YOU 'LISTENING'?!? :) :) :)
Thanks in advance!
