I'm starting a wip.

I like old transistor radios --- I like simplicity -- I like plain and square.

Here's the photo reference, ... found it on eBay.

Screenshots/renders forthcoming.

Although it's looks to be a simple model, .. My intent is to stay true with all the micro filleting. We'll see -- should have it done sometime tonight.

Very good choice ivox, i like the design a lot (will keep the picture in my design museum folder). I will definitely look further to see more about your WIP.

EDIT: Any idea of the production date of this product?

hyltom ... thanks for looking. I'm surprised you like it with all the mod stuff you do, .. but I'm glad.

The ebay listing actually had a lot of reference photos and there was this one.

So, .. the handwritten tag says, June 12, 1970. Maybe that's a production date, ..maybe not ... I'll dig a little on my own and try to find out. I already didi a little, ..but came up empty.

ps. The 'insect proof' text has got to be the best part. And of course, ..it's clearly NOT insect proof.

And finally, .. all layers visible. :)

I didn't model the back, ... do it later. :) So, .. all in all -- not too bad. Toughest part was keeping good clearances around the lens with no intersections. No fudging. lol.. Hardest thing was actually getting a good mesh on the tight stuff from Rhino. ....sigh. All modeled on an old machine -- dual Athlon 2.0ghz with 2GB's and a geforce 7300 card.
Not bad ! :) It'll have to be 8 cores for rendering though ....

Also: obviously, .. all geometry and no displacement/ texture maps.

That is SICK that you did that so quickly! It would have taken me all day to do that in Rhino :(. I guess it is time for some upgrading :)! nice job Ivox that is seriously nice!!!

Did you use a background bitmap? If so, was that just so that you got the angles correct? Thanks for sharing :)

Yeah .. I did. It's the first SS image. And yeah, .. just for proper proportion and placement(knobs/dial text etc..).

Nice model. Let's see if you can render it as fast as you modeled it... :P

by the way ....

For stuff like this, ..there is nothing faster than Rhino.

An hour for the rough model and a little less than an hour to tweak it out with fillets and such. That's given you know your way around Rhino, .. but once you do --- it's pretty fast. Now, .. organic stuff, .... well .......

Alright ....

Renders were around 2 hours per ...

Simple materials:

Plastics done with wizards

Thomas An. acrylic

Hyltom Stainless Steel

The now famous Scratched Chrome. :)

I never did radial anisotrophy, .. so I had to examine a Tom material for an education. thanks Tom. ;) So the dial is a combination of the scratched chrome/ hyltom Stainless with aniso angle maps.

There's another still burning .....
