Thanks Herve
im still playing with making materials to recreate realistic looking veneer and high pressure laminates.
is there a good way to make specular maps?

Good to see a new wip from you Frosty :)

I have a couple of things i'd like to comment on if you don't mind, these are..
- The whole image feels very dark and it lacks contrast
- The wooden sides materials look very flat, and some other surfaces are also quite flat in their appearance
- There's no chair ? or maybe there's not supposed to be a chair by this desk
- Your keyboard and computer box is all black, barely no details can be seen there.
- There's no desklight or lightsource hanging above the desk to flood it with light
- No mousepad ? :)

And it's very noisy even after 20+ hours of rendering. Could have something to do with your semi-reflective floor..

Max Thanks for the comments.
I'm not sure what i should do to add contrast
my wood material is lacking... needs specular map and other work
i think i will add chairs, but maybe on the two sides opposite the camera
will that look odd??
ill see if i have a better cpu model
and i should add a mouse pad just for appearance
though im not sure about adding a lightsource, do i need a modeled light
or just a hidden emitter above the desk?

thanks
dan

What is your lighting setup, could you post a viewport view of the entire scene?

my lighting is two hidden to camera emitter planes (low-poly)
and an hdri map

here is a print screen

does having hidden emitters add noise/render time

The very big emitters makes the image having a low contrast..

maybe try an hdri...

is their a different way i should set up my hdri's

I would make the two emitters you have aimed horizontal (not downwards), add a larger emitter from above and remove the hdr environment. The black needs to be a touch lighter until you can start to make out some details, or you can make the black have more specularity.

The wood texture on your wood components is too busy. Use a more suttle grain.

I like it! It looks very realistic. I think lighting is good except maybe it needs a "main" light in the scene. Something to add specular highlights and some nice shadows. Maybe a camera flash?

Try making the ground plane smaller, think of it like a backdrop in a studio, make it big enough so it covers the what the camera sees. Check if you get smaller render times with the smaller plane.
