Here's something i started on tonight, it's a knife which design and construction is inspired by laplanders knifes. Modeling, unwrapping will be done in Modo, texturing and scene setup will be taken care of in C4D and final rendering with Maxwell.

I'll update as i progress working more on this, so stay tuned for updates.

Added the hardened leather cover part, it needs more work but i'll do that tomorrow.

Btw, ALL parts modeled in Modo will be sculpted in Zbrush to add all the extremly fine details needed. :)

Nice modelling so far.
The handle looks a bit more curved than in the ref pic.
But you said it was your inspiration so maybe you are just basing your model on it?
Anyway, good so far.
I preordered the Modo301 book that is released later this month.
I am waiting on that book before I dive into Modo.
It's way different than what I'm used to (Max) and I need some instructions...
Do you like sculpting better in Zbrush than Modo?
[End of rambling]

JC: Thanks :)

Wayne: Thank you! :) it's still early in the process but i'm quite satisfied with the look of the blade, hopefully i can realize the idea i have in my head.

Bubba: Thanks :) true the handle is more curved than in the ref photo, and i'll most likely tone it's curvature down a little bit more before i finalize the design. The photo is as a reference/inspiration so i have something to extract the correct proportions, size and shape of things from and also the surfaces.

Good to hear you pre-ordered the book :) it looks like a nice one. Actually if you can work with 3dsmax or any other program like that, or if you have past Lightwave experience then you won't have any problems getting into Modo. It's alot easier and userfriendly than what those apps are. Even without that book you could learn the basics of Modo within a day. But feel free to ask me or anyone else on the forum as we're quite a few Modo users here now that can help if you get stuck somewhere.

Zbrush is always better for sculpting, you can push the polycount far higher without having any crashes and such problems, Modo works ok for low to medium poly sculpting but i wouldn't use it for any highres highdetail type sculpting. You're better off building a basemesh in Modo then lifting that over to Zbrush and do the rest of the work there.

I'll be back with updates in a while once i got something to show.

hey Max... wonderful... and I know it is going to be a real cool render as well

for some reason, it looks like a fisherman knife... am I right..?

Isn't Modo amazing...?
(I still have to upgrade to 301 though... )

cant wait to see the result... i also have a hand made lapua knife, forged in 1978 and they are beautiful!
For those who wonder, the tail of those knifes makes a bump in order to keep little finger bend behind.. this blocks the knife in the hand, this way in freezing temps knife cant slip back and cut your own fingers :) smart and efficient!
are you going to use displacement for the leather ?

Hervé: Thanks and yes i hope i'll be able to piece together a couple of nice renderings of this thingy. :) ..a fisherman's knife, hmm.. i don't know about that, it's possible. Modo is great fun, it makes polymodeling a joy. Not like it is with many other 3d apps. Hopefully you'll be able to upgrade to 301 soon Hervé.

def4d: Thank you :) i'm also curious to see what results i'll be able to get with the unwrapper. They could be pretty poor as i'm not that good at it yet. :/

messire: :) thanks! oh nice, you got a real one. They're pretty expensive by now. Good explanation of what that tail does. The idea was to use displacement for surface imperfections all around and that includes the leather. I want the surfaces to feel ..alive.

Teabag: Hehe thanks :) i guess this will go down the same lane as that screwdriver i created last year, same amount of detail and level of precision when it comes to materials etc.

And tonight's update, it's not as big as i planned because i got caught up on a lunch out all day long today so all my time ran quickly away and i had only like half the evening now to model more on this. Anyhow, what i've done is listed below.

- Knifeblade tweaked some more
- Leather part probably finalized now
- Brass rings added to leather part
- Main knifenlade holder thingy basemesh complete (i forgot it's name)
- Objects refitted and adjusted to match better, model built to fit together like the real knife is. (more work will be done on this tomorrow)

What's left to do..
- Knife handle needs to be separated and rebuilt from scratch so each element in it (metal, reindeer stuff, leather, wood) are all separeate parts.
- Knifeblade needs to extend all the way through the handle
- Model a twisted leahterstring that's used to tie the knife to a belt, including some sorta laplandish designs onto this string.
- Tweak and refit meshes again, and final adjustements, unwrapping, preparing, basic texturepainting, quick testrenders and much much more. :)

Adrian: Thank you so much! but i just started and these are the basemeshes you're looking at, wait until i reach the Zbrush pass. :) that's when the details will be brought out of these models.

I'll be posting another update of the basemeshes in a while, i got more work done on them now, more finetuning and tweaking and then some...

Stay tuned!

Hervé: :)

Today is a okay day for updates, these may not be massive but i think they're quite necessary for the total look and feel of the model. I still wanna add more bells'n'whistles to it.

What i've done today is..
- Fixed the handle, now it has a more natural bend and shape making it easier to hold in your hand.
- Fixed the brass end knob on the handle.
- Knifeblade now extends fully into the handle for easier stacking of materials like in the real life versions of these types of knifes.
- Added a few tied leatherstrings around the base of the knifeblade holder thingy.
- Added brass nails to the knife holder thingy, on both sides.
- Fixed meshproblems in the knife holder thingy models and matched them up better to eachother.

I think that's all i've done today, not to much but it's something..
