A While Back I modelled a Boss Distortion Pedal. I decided to start updating it. Here is the first attempt. I intend as I did back then to beat this pedal up and dirty it up too.

Looks great! :) but i would like to see some more contrast in the shot, it's a bit to evenly lit now.

Thank you for your kind words.

Max. I used the Sandy Koufax Portable studio method for lighting this. I think it gives quite a natural feel to the scene. But you are probably right, lacking a bit in depth. I will look into it, any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I intend to get a bit more depth into this with displacement (can't wait) on the floorboards and by putting some other details back into the scene, such as the Guitar Leads etc.

The powder coat on the pedal needs a little work too, the dimple effect needs to be more apparent. I am going to chip some paint off too, maybe another job for displacement!

Oh ok i see now how you did, then i understand why you got the result you did. Natural feel yes, but not entirely realistic in my eyes which is why i suggested some more contrast as you with that also would get more defined shadows and direction of light and so on. As you also said about roughing up the model by scratching off some paint is a good idea, that would boost the realistic feel more.

Displacement might still be a month or two away..

The new one looks better but I would think that there might be more contact / indirect shadows on the ground below the pedal. ???

You are right.

I will introduce emitters to bring out the form and solidity to the pedal and floor.

It does look like it is detached a bit from its surroundings.

Keep the crits coming! I get too close to these images, it takes you lot out there to spot these things.

I got one more little suggestion for you :) (sorry)

Please don't center the subject in your shot, shift it to the left or right or up or down in the frame to avoid the typical photography newbie mistakes most people do when they snap photos of stuff. Also you might wanna try different camera angles and perhaps create a more dramatic shot from this by placing the camera in a "weird" and unexpected position relative to the subject you're shooting.

Agreed Max. But I must admit, this was never going to be the final composition.

I'd Better come up with a good one now, me thinks!

I think the lighting is close to perfect.

Material-wise, ..I think you should probably have the roughness at 0 for those ¼" jacks .

Yeh, they do look a bit rough. I tried to put scratches on them, but maybe too much.

I will lower it a bit.
