SSS Grapes

Don't ask me why, but I've been a bit caught up trying to get a decent grape thing happening...........these are the current multilight tests:

the SSS is ABS 0.01 and Scat is 0.99...........please what am I doing wrong here anyone?
There's transmission, dispersion is 'on' and Nd is 1.42....
If I can nail the sub-surface I can finally move onto the mapping! :)

Those are too transparent. I think they should be more diffuse on surface and sss needs more absorption. And some seeds inside would do well to realism.

Good luck.

Hey Glebe. Its looking promising mate, but as Fernando said, somethings off. It might just be that there's no mapping yet - its been a while since I studied grapes to be fair :)

I found this link though, and thought it might be of interest. Its a really good Mental Ray SSS tutorial from Gnomon, all about grapes! You might be able to compare....something, or use it.....in some way :)

Stuart, ... let's make wine! :P

I think you've taken on a particularly difficult challenge here.. If you think accurately about the composition of a grape, ..we'd have 3 areas of density. It goes from a denser interior and fades to something lighter near the skin and of course the skin itself. I believe you've come nearly as close as you can in trying to nail it all in one shot. :)

I guess what I'm basically saying is that perhaps this would ideally be treated as 2 objects, ...but maybe that's a bit messy. and of course, ...maybe I'm wrong as hell.

I'd say just map it and see what you get.

A reference shot I found for you.

Hey thanks guys, really appreciate the input. :)

Fernando, yes I'll ramp the absorbtion [for the inner core] and yeah, seeds would be a worthwhile addition. :)
Matt, really appreciate that Gnomon link, Gonna see what ideas I can nick from it.
Chris, Yes maybe I'll just have a glass or two and forget the render! But yes, you're right mate, two objects minimum [for the 'pedantic' mxm] and just the map for the deadline.

Guys, you're all great. :)

I am working on a material with similar properties. And i haven't got the results i expected until i added another channel with sss off, where you should work with transmission. I would suggest to add a 20% weighted layer, whose transmission channel could be a very saturated and bright warm green, with a short absorption distance. Set the reflections to a low value of brightness (not to interact too much with the behaviour of the external surface) and set the roughness to 20 or so. This way you should get a more vivid and bright colour. At least, this worked for me even if the material is slightly different (jelly)

Anyway, i would move this topic into the MXM section, the A-team guys are quick, kind and exhaustive. Tom and Thomas, thanx again for help.
