Alright, I'll make the first step then. This place is supposed to display all my progress during my contest entry. I will use 3ds max8 SP3, MXW 1.1(plugin workflow), Polyboost, Photoshop CS2 and Neat Image.
I am right now choosing my image I am going to model from.
Keep you updated,
Benjamin

A scanned image from one of my magazines. It's highly detailed and relies on both exterior skydome lighting in conjunction with interior artificial lights. That's makes it good for multilight purposes which we are also required to deliver if I remeber correctly There are lots of glossy surfaces, liquids in glass, scattering through curtains etc.The atmosphere will very hard to nail down, I believe + there are a ton of different shaders. Uploading them all into the MXM Gallery will alone take one month I think.
(P.S. No I won't create the dog.)

The first step would be to find the correct perspective and cameralens to build your geometry from. This example should be sufficient. Uses a 35mm lens, the photographers multipurpose lens of choice. I always start with this on when I try to match a photo. The proxygeometry will also be used to early develop the placements of lights since testrenderings will be very quick on such light geometry. Once that is done, I start by replacing the proxys with their highpoly counterparts. (Well. thats the theory I always use).

Nice of you to start this thread and go through the whole process!
How detailed will you make the typewriter?

Glad to see your process Tora. Your photomatch solution is very good. The photo-source had very good lines in it as well as I believe they may have used a shift-lens camera to avoid distortion.
Please continue, I like your process. It is very good to see how you work when creating these fantastic images.

thanks tyrone, I actually thought that everyone will show WIP images. Or is this a secret contest in which I jump out on the last day with my final image?
I hope to see other artists share their techniques like I will do with mine. In cgtalk challenges you are required by the rules to post your progress as you go along. They actually give away prices for the ones who have been the most communicative and productive.

I completely agree with you Tora. I do like like those situations where people do not post wip but jump out at the last minute with work. Please continue your progress as I am sure it will inspire others to share their techniques and work style as well. There is nothing to lose but much more to gain by taking an objective look at one's own process.
I am thinking about entering this one, but my time is very limited for these type of projects, I had to pull out of contest at another site as my time has gotten very short lately with work. This one goes a little longer, I may jump in here somewhat.

That is amazing Tora! Do you model one half of the model and then mirror?

Yeah, I am using the symmetry modifier in max until I am almost finished with the geometry. When I am done with all symmetrical details I collapse the mesh into an editable poly and start to randomzie vertices here and there to make it look less generic and perfect. I furthermore use boxmodeling only, this chair started from a box with 65*65*11.5 cm with 1 subdivision per axis. I add polys where I need them through the modeling process. I am using a plugin called "Polyboost" which comes often in very handy.
