Challenge on the CGsoc forum, had a spare hour last night so quickly knocked this off and rendered overnight:
Can anyone suggest a good candle material? Far too much 'sss action' going on at the moment, but abs and scat are both set to 0.1......
any cc's for improvement greatfully recieved.

Thanks Sandy.

Smoke just Photoshopped in.........layered as 'screen' overlay and contrasted out till it looked right.

Very nice scene.
Increase absorption for achieving the look you need.

Update:
Absorbtion now at 0.8, still need to work on a better wax!........it ain't right, not happy with it....but work to do so it joins the growing list of the 'unfinished'.
(the post-render flames suck, I know).

great render glebe,
I'm no expert but seem to remember that when using SSS the setting had to be very close to 1 or 0, i.e 0.001 or 0.999, depending on what effect you want. Maybe your 0.1 and 0.8 settings aren't close enough?

You're probably right Oz, going to try this first. Thanx for the pointer.

Stuart, ...... how very darkly romantic.
I'd say the candle looks on the whole, .....oK, ....if you could just get the transmittance to be deaded out the light somewhere around a third of the way down it'd be a winner -- I think.

Thanks Chris, working on it........

.......you know what it's like, a quick 1hr throwaway turns into something that hogs your next two evenings.
edit: here's the final image. I'm done........flames still bad but I gotta stop tinkering and get on with some real stuff!
