Hi everyone,

It’s been hot in Chicago so we’re gonna cool off with this creative event! I would like to invite you to the Maxwell Cool Clay Render Challenge. 8)

The goal of this challenge is to develop a subtly cool material in combination with an environment and lighting scheme that looks great for any model one throws at it. Entries will be evaluated on their striking visual quality as a clay render.

The 411:
1. Prizes will include at least one top prize of a $100 iTunes certificate. I reserve the right to hand out add’l certificates for honors that become apparent once we are up and running! All decisions, no matter how arbitrary, are final.
2. Enter a material and an environment with lighting. Post sample renders.
3. Clay material should be subtly cool.
4. Environment ground/backdrop can use a different material to compliment the clay.
5. Any lighting scheme is acceptable including HDR/MXI, sun, etc...
6. Others should be able to download your submission, insert a model, apply your material to it and hit render to get a cool clay
7. Work in either meters for environmental scale or centimeters for table top
8. Timing: Two weeks to experiment and submit, one week for voting.
9. Send me some suggestions for ways to host submissions and voting.
10. Enjoy! And thanks for your efforts…

Let the challenge begin!

One thought that came to my mind. HDRIs will have to be non-commercial ones as i think rule #6 would violate copyright law.

Hey everyone,

With my relative light cheerleading and the forum's glib response, I am wondering if this was a boring challenge or if we didn't spark it with some examples...

Let me know if you're still interested, I'd love to see some examples of great clays, but maybe i don't have the energy to get you going!
