geez, thanks joseph, you're too kind   please, there's still far too much to continue learning about this stuff

unfortunately i have never played with C4D, even though it constantly catches my attention. but, i can say that silo is probably the most user friendly and intuitive app i have ever used, smooth learning curve from what i've experienced AND it's a relatively cheap app. it has found a snug little spot in my pipeline.... (then again, some people find modo and blender a breeze which has slipped from my grasp more times than i can count :( ) at the end of the day, it just depends what works best for your process. thanks again for the kind words!

macray, thanks again for the moi info. i downloaded the trial and played around with it, but i am not too familiar with nurbs and the precision control bothers me a bit :( ....... but i'll keep playing with it anyway!

sascha, got your message. the windows consist of a single mesh with the texture mapped to it like you mention.
There is only one material assigned to the window mesh which uses several layers with layer masks that reveal each material. For instance, the glass for the material has a layer mask which only shows the glass... hope this helps

thanks guys, but what is most impresdive is that i'm responding to this while sitting on the couch in living room, browsing the forum on our new wii system..... table lamp already fell victim to wii controller... this is dangerous!

a bit offtopic but still, i would like to see someone render a wii-system with that nice illumination from the discdrive.
i bought myself that black-katana case so my wii is piano black with red light on the drive.

barnacles.... each barnacle has roughly 360 polys at render time. smaller ones surrounding the bigger ones inherit the same displacement as the big ones which is making them all "hairy"

going to try a new method for the scattering/grungy barnacles around the bigger ones... learning z-brush as i go. it's been a headache doing so, but the process is becoming quite enjoyable
