I build my 3d in autocad, and import via file link manager to 3dmax.
This is where i plan to assign materials and do up the lighting. Normally, there will be changes to the model, so if i update my DWG file. I will need to update the file in the max file. but that is where the problem comes in, cos I will lose the materials assignments done previously.. Is there any way I can keep the material assignments with the new import?

Hi,

There has been some problems doing this in max in the past, max8 worked, 8.1 didn't work, i thought 9 was working again. What versions are you using? To be honest, you will proboably get better luck searching and posting at CGTalk and The AREA for this kind of quetion. I know this has been discussed before. nothing against you maxwell guys...

I too have this problem with DWG files to Max9.

Imported through file link manager, applied all my materials, got everything mapped, updated my dwg file and bam all the materials are gone and I have to re-apply everything.
