I have a client who uses archicad and is supplying me with a model in 3ds format to bring into max. The problem is that everything is broken up into hundreds of objects with no grouping into layers whatsoever.
Anybody run into this and know of a sollution for this situation.

A good way could be organizing the objects by material or color.
(Prepared by the client in ArchiCAD).

The problem is: There are several ways to save 3ds format in archicad: one is (as i remember) to save/organize the model by materials. Perhaps some trials are necessary.....

3ds Max can recognize same colors (materials)...good for texturing (with propagate enabled). Also select by color works with this approach.

Best wishes,

Roman

Try this:
http://plugins.angstraum.at/archicad_wiz/index.htm
It is an old Max plugin for correctly importing 3ds files from Archicad...
