I'm curious to know if anybody else has found the following situation to be true.

Does 3ds Max crash for you when the first thing you try to do after opening the file is open the Material Editor?

Secondly, has anybody noticed that it crashes a little bit less if you render a scene from Max before doing anything else?

This has been happening to me a lot, especially since my first instinct is to work on a scene when I open it and not render it first.

Yes, I've found the first statement true. I have not tryed the second though. What I do is change the renderer to scanline open material editor and change back to maxwell; it usually works fine when I find the problem.

I am experiencing exactly the same. I have to revert back the render engine to scanline and then back to maxwell (loosing all the rendering settings btw) every once I reopen a previously saved scene. A bit annoying indeed when I come back to the office every morning.

You can save the settings if you save a preset at the bottom of the render scene dialogue.

BTW, the problem only appears sometimes here.
