Yes you need to assign a projector to the plane, or export it from Max with UVW map modifier and assign a material with an image map applied.

MAX CRASHES EVERYTIME!
No matter what material I use, even with no textures, it crashes.

Set Temp mxs path to default in Edit> maxwell preferences in studio. Also set Output mxs file to temprender.mxs in system tab in 3dsmax. That worked for me.
Edit: I've noticed that default output mxs file in max plugin is "default.mxs" and that variable has changed to temprender.mxs. The path in studio and in plugin HAS to be the same; that's the only problem (here). There is no need to set the default paths.

Well, it worked here with a new simple scene but not with a scene from v1 I'm working on.

What's wrong?
That scene has no texture and materials.
IMO, 1.1 plugin is the worst.
