I am trying the new max plug-in for version 1.1 I have noticed that the materials ca be previewed in the material editor however I can't find a way to preview the texture on the scene. Is there anyway to do that?
thanks for the tips.

In any version you can actually display a texture in the scene if you want to. Just open up the Mental Ray Connection rollout below the Maxwell Render rollout, pick any random channel and put a BITMAP texmap in there. Pick the texture you want, and hit the little checkered cube icon. It'll display that texture in the scene wherever the MXM is applied.

Hacky, but usable.

I've found a cool way to do this with Maxwell materials.

Create your maxwell material, plastic for this example, now load up a colour map.

When loaded and you are still looking at the bitmap dialogue for the material, press the display in viewport button.

This button is greyed out on the Plastic material dialogue, but is not in the bitmap dialogue.

Viola. :D Hope it makes sense.

Tim.

Yes, I see arroway mxm too but not at first try though. After I open mxed, change the texture to show (the eye next to refresh preview) and it works.

That's all that 3ds Max is able to display anyway. So you just have to pick the map that best distinguishes the texture for your objects.

Actually, if you run in DirectX mode, you can display an arbitrary shader in the viewport (check out the DirectX 9 material). Of course this is only if the plug-in writer has supplied proper DX9 shading code for their material (which I assume Next Limit did not).

Hi Fernando:
What version of max are you using. I have viz2005 and does not support what you are talking about.
Thanks
