Editable mesh - collapse elements?

I have really wierd problem and difficult question.
How can it take 34 min to translate 300k poly scene to mxs?
I'm trying to use hair modifier with M~R. To do that i have to convert
hair to geometry and delete hair effect. M~R will crash otherwise.
If i had hair with 20000 strands, now i have mesh including 20000 elements.
It's impossible to render that kind of object - because?
(now this is just my own idea)
When max plugin translates geometry to mxs, it calculates elements
separatly. Am i right? Because that is slowing down alot. In my case
it could be so much faster to have one big mesh ->sublevel one element.
So to my question - finally:
How can i collapse elements inside editable mesh to one element?
