Max materials un-name themselves

I have noticed if I close out of Max then reopen a file, the names in the material slot are automatical renamed to something like "Material #1".

Renaming the file is difficult because you can't read the entire path in the editor.

Clicking Edit Material will give you the original MXM name, but not tell you where the file is located.

Choose MXM Material will lead you to the MXM file you are looking for but if you don't click the file again you lose the link.

And finally, material previews only show first time a material is selected from the preset library.

I'm getting nice images but in Max they are a helluva lot of work.

Same thing here

Big problem - Renaming the file because you can't read or edit the path in max's editor.

Buggy - material preview.

I'm testing a scene with 34 materials and these issues are a major pain. I opened a max scene this morning that I rendered last night and needed to adjust some materials - I spent way too long trying to figure what mxm's were attached to what object.

I just tried saving the scene materials to a material library file (.mat) and nothing carried over. It's all blank MXM references.

There's a moral to this story somewhere - or a clue as to what is broken with the relationship between the Maxwell MXM rollout and the material editor.

Material names are fickle indeed.

Yesterday I opened the same file I had the problems and the correct MXM names reappeared.

Today as I again worked on that file, the names reverted to calling themselves " Material # 1, 2...etc".

Also I noticed if I place my cursor at the end of the material name in Max's Material Editor and hit the enter key, the material preview will actually display properly, but only for the shader presets that are part of Maxwell's material database.

I think the materials in the editor are going to do what they want, when they want and we have little say in the matter.

Zeros and Ones. Who would have thought, eh?
