ok guys,

for me RC3 worked even better now, and i am very happy to have a plugin right now.

anyway, here is the same scene with the three renderers:

beta (physical sky + sunlight):

Image

RC2: 3 emitters, 5 reflectors, coated diffuse (7:30h, SL 18.5):

Image

RC3: 3 emitters, 5 reflectors, coated diffuse (7:30h, SL 18.12):

Image

RC4: 3 emitters, 5 reflectors, coated diffuse (10h, SL 19.51)

pleas post your comparisons here

Damn ! ........well done. , .......the best advertisement for RC3 yet.

......this thought about some X factor in the RC's being something 'more photorealistic than the beta's ........i've kind of noticed it too .....and this image illustrates it, but i still can't verbalize it. Great.

ps. ....the time of 7:30H is still out there ....... :(

If NL had tried to sell RC3 as a physically correct and photorealistic renderer, I wouldn't have looked twice at it.

Some of the renders look like Matthew Brady took them. I expect to see Civil War casualties strewn about.

I'm sure that NL has gotten the message that the render engine is seriously broken. I hope it gets fixed soon.

For sure ...., the comment was made strictly within the confines of our current situation with RC3 and it's community of users. It's definitely not ready for a world wide broadcast of 'the best thing since sliced bread'.

probably it's difficult to compare these renders, because of the different lighting setups between beta and RCs. but definitely the RC versions miss that certain extra quality that makes you doubt about a CGI rendering for a moment!
i've the same same opinion as frances here. there's really nothing special in these renderings apart the apparently caustics related problems.

would be really interesting to re-render the same RC scene under the beta renderer.

i´ll search for the same scene in the deep of my harddiscs.
think i´ve made one with the same lighting setup.

wait until this evening...

I forgot to mention to arch4d that you have a nice scene and the materials look good. What I said is not a slight against your talant. :)

no problem frances !

I know, these releases are far behind the beta engine regarding it´s quality, but besides that, i think we need to learn the new material system.

for me, it´s completely different to what i knew until now, but i think it has its potential.

i am really thinking of reinstalling the good old beta, but i need to test these Alpha Release Candidates...

if i can´t find one,
has anybody still installed the beta version, using c4d ?

then i could send him the c4d file to let it render through beta.
but i´ll search first. in about 3-4 hours i can say if i´ve got one or not.

... or we got another RC then ...

ok, here it comes, the same scene as you rendered in RC2 and RC3, but not the same materials. i rendered the file you sent me straight out of C4D, last maxwell OSX beta version, no postprocessing, rendertime 2h.

Image

probably the scene needs to be tweaked to get the same light ambiance as in the RC renderings.

[edit] looking at this new image, i'm completely missing the diffuse reflections on the ground in the RC renderings.

cheers
