Kevin Sutherland: It seems most success is being achieved where people have had the 3D plugin updated. For others the situation, at present, is pretty much a sham.

Well I really like the new material possibilities, this release isn't so unusable as people suggest, I think though lots of things have been deactivated....

And we need info on how to use the new materials.

Mihai Iliuta: Perhaps your definition of stability is much different to my interpretation. After "3 years of hard work" by Next Limit most people cannot even get RC to output a render. Just as well Next Limit didn't take things easy.

Nice render though - what 3D software are you using?

Just for to clarify my question for the child like response above:

Mihai Iliuta: What software did you export the scene from?

Because you feel it is so fantastic perhaps you would also be kind enough to provide a basic step by step how you got there?

Whiskey: Perhaps if the beta testers had actually done some proper 'betaring' there wouldn't be the the Maxwell sham of today! Place that where the sunshine don't shine - in this case MaxwellRC :D :D :D

These are obj, exported from XSI.

I just got home a few hours ago, but I just took it step by step.

-Uninstalled Maxwell
-deleted old Maxwell folder
-installed the RC
-made sure there was an environment variable named Path and it point to the mxcl folder (there has to also be a MAXWELL_ROOT variable pointing to the main Maxwell folder)

That's it, I can render. Ofcourse there are issues, mostly I think disabled features.

- no sky or skydome
- no textures
- if I use the dropdown menu from the viewport and chose Render, it crashes, every time. But if I just use the render button, it doesn't. In fact it hasn't crashed once.
- if I try and change the weightmap param in material editor, it freezes.
- opening material browser stalls it for a few secs.
- buttons on top row don't stay depressed, so you don't know if you're in move or rotate...
- in mxcl, preview window doesn't seem to work
- changing iso/shutterspeed doesn't seem to work
- enabling/disabling material layers doesn't do anything
......

that's all I have for now :P

Like I said I have only used it for a very short while, but the speed and materials look really promising.

I mean look at those highlights, they're not just plain white, there's subtle color tinges, and the way it spreads out, and little blue stripes from the coating.....it's really nice I think.

I really hope they start enabling the rest of the functionality in the following days.

wagurto, sky or skydome don't work for now. Use emitters.

I think, NL should play with new toy "studio" after the plugins are updated. Now, nothing works right. :?

Mihai Iliuta: Thank you. It seems apparent that RC is doing different things for different people. Unlike you I can get a preview render without much problem now. Come to a proper though render and nothing - have checked all the variables a few times now.

Anyway glad you have it working, now for the other hundreds to do the same!

Preview works for me as well, just no sun shows up if you have physical sky selected.

What happens when you press the render button? Nothing happens?

Kris Handley: In the context of the current RC I do not feel my comment was at all harsh, especially as one of testers decided to make a child like response to a reasonable question.

Mihai Iliuta: Nothing at all. I will see what next week brings in the way of updated RC. In the meantime I can get to grips with some of the material functions and if all gets too bad reinstall the older, working Maxwell beta.
