Hey guys,

I need a rough plastic effect with fuzzy countours of what's behind it. Dielectrics with high roughness do the job, but remain dark and noisy. What about SSS? Where can I find it and how do I use it to get the effect I need?

Is SSS simply the scattering and absorption values? And what values should I use to get it quite transparent?

Ok, did some test renders and Thomas, I read in one of your topics that SSS could be used as an alternative for dielectrics, but I can't get obvious transparency using absorption and scattering. I guess SSS is mainly visible when a light is right next to it, or am I wrong? So the fuzzy shower window effect would only be apparent if the beautiful woman under the shower has a radiant personality. :)

Next to the above ‘shortcoming’ of SSS as an alternative to dielectrics you would also miss the abbe and IOR settings of course.

That would be very interesting, but I can't remember saying it. Where was that ?

.... oh I see what you were refering to ... in that post I was "dreaming" about what SSS should look like and how it *should* behave. It was a theoretical thingy. In other words it would be nice if we could range between SSS and dielectrics in one continuous gradient fashion, because I feel they are both part of the same underlying physical principles.
